What you will do
Role Description
We are looking for a leading 2D Nanomaterial characterization scientist to drive our research and development on advanced 2D material characterization and integration, with a particular focus on graphene, hBN, and related materials in field-effect transistor (FET) structures. In this role, you will combine hands-on experimental expertise with advanced robotic techniques to optimize and upscale the large-scale inspection to improve throughput, reproducibility, and device yield. Your work will bridge fundamental nanomaterials science with industrial requirements.
Beyond technical execution, you will take responsibility for shaping the strategic direction of our 2D technology pipeline. This includes defining our research roadmap, prioritizing high-impact projects, and leading experimental efforts that demonstrate the industrial potential of 2D nanomaterials in semiconductor and quantum applications. You will collaborate closely with our nanotechnology, robotics, and AI engineers, ensuring alignment between material integration processes and machine capabilities, while also representing our company in external collaborations, funding projects, and strategic partnerships.
This position is designed for a scientist with a strong academic track record and a proven ability to translate breakthroughs in 2D nanomaterials into processes and prototypes that matter for industry. It offers the opportunity to combine scientific leadership with hands-on impact in a deep-tech start-up environment.
Responsibilities
2D characterization R&D:
- Lead experimental work on large scale characterization graphene, hBN, and other 2D materials.
- Develop scalable high throughput, high precision metrology processes.
- Bonus: experience with transfer techniques
Industrial application focus:
- Translate research into robust processes with industrial viability.
- Lead projects demonstrating the potential of 2D nanomaterials in semiconductor and quantum device applications.
Strategic leadership:
- Define and manage the 2D technology roadmap, setting priorities for R&D.
- Scout new opportunities in 2D integration and align them with commercial goals.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with nanotechnology, robotics, and AI engineers to ensure integration processes are aligned with system capabilities.
- Act as the scientific lead in 2D materials for partnerships, grants, and collaborations.
Your Profile
Background
- PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Strong publication and project record in 2D nanomaterials (graphene, hBN, CNTs).
- Optional: Proven experience with integration of 2D materials into FET or device structures.
- Optional: Experience in computational physics, specifically molecular dynamics simulations applied to device integration.
- Optional: Track record of projects with clear industrial relevance (e.g., scaling, yield optimization, application prototypes).
Skills & Qualifications
Technical expertise:
- Hands-on experimental skills in 2D nanomaterial characterization and transfer.
- Experience with Raman, FET, Hall bar device fabrication and characterization.
- Strong understanding of throughput, reproducibility, and yield optimization in industrial contexts.
Mindset:
- Strategic thinker with the ability to define and lead a technology roadmap.
- Entrepreneurial and motivated to translate science into industry.
- Comfortable working in a start-up environment with shifting priorities.
Collaboration:
- Strong communication skills in English (German a plus).
- Ability to represent the company in academic, industrial, and investor-facing settings.
